Fresh off a four-game sweep of the Pawtucket Red Sox, it was announced last night that Double-A Akron outfielders Clint Frazier and Bradley Zimmer, the Indians top two prospects according to Baseball America, were being promoted to Triple-A Columbus.
Frazier, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, racked up a .278/.362/.454 slash line in 89 games with Akron this season, slugging 13 homers and 25 doubles with 48 RBI in the process. The 21-year-old Loganville, GA, native was ranked the No. 21 prospect in Baseball America’s Midseason Top 100 prospects list.
Zimmer, the 21st overall pick in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, slashed .253/.371/.471 with 14 home runs, six triples, 20 doubles and 53 RBI in 93 games as a RubberDuck this year. At the time of his promotion, Zimmer led the Eastern League with 56 walks, ranked third with 33 stolen bases and was fifth in both OBP (.371) and extra-base hits (40). The 23-year-old San Francisco University product ranked No. 26 on Baseball America’s Midseason Top 100.
Outfielders Greg Allen and Luigi Rodriguez have been promoted from Advanced-A Lynchburg to fill the gap left by Frazier and Zimmer’s departure in Akron.
In more good news for the Clippers, infielder/outfielder Yandy Diaz today was named the International League’s Player of the Week.
Over the last week, Diaz led the IL with a .519 batting average (yes, you read that right) as he went 14-for-27 with three doubles, a triple, a home run, eight RBI, six runs scored and five walks.
The 24-year-old turned in six multi-hit efforts over his last seven games and is riding a 14-game hitting streak, the second-longest active streak in the IL. Diaz is the circuit leader in both batting and on-base percentage as he has slashed .340/.419/.496 in 63 games with the Clip Show this season.
The Clippers entered Monday’s off day with a 4.0 game lead in the IL West and will kick off a six-game road trip in Norfolk on Tuesday.
