The numbers:

  • 11-12, 4.55 ERA
  • 170 strikeouts (career high)
  • .232 opponents batting average

Behind the numbers:

  • Was 8-5 with a 3.76 ERA (and .218 opp. average) at the All-Star break before a few second-half hiccups
  • At just 24 years old, one of four Indians starters with 170 or more strikeouts
  • Six starts of eight or more strikeouts (13 in his career)
  • Was seventh in the AL In strikeouts per nine innings (8.69)
  • His hitless innings streak of 9 to start the season was the third-longest by an AL starter in the last 20 years (first Indians starter to do so since Feller in 1940)
  • Threw his first career complete game on July 28 vs. KC
  • Worked out of the bullpen on Sept. 19 before returning to the rotation for a final start on Oct. 1, in which he allowed one run in seven innings
  • Designed T-shirts to benefit military nonprofit Lone Survivor Foundation
  • He also provided one of the best moments of comic relief this year, as he imitated the batting stances of Jason Kipnis, Ryan Raburn and Mike Aviles during a rainy game in Pittsburgh
