Shirtless Cleveland Indians fan an instant Internet celebrity

So on Wednesday afternoon, it was hot at Progressive Field — 90 degrees and humid. So you can understand how fans might want to try to find ways to cool down.

One fan in particular was easily identifiable in his search for relief from the heat: The fan pictured above, who made it on to the SportsTime Ohio telecast of the game due to his seat — in the dugout suite behind the plate, caught by the TV cameras throughout the game.

When our photographer, Dan Mendlik, caught a shot of the gentleman, we Tweeted:

But, we thought: We had to know more, and we thought we owed it to our fans to tell this man’s — this LEGEND’s — story.

His name is Matt, but jokingly said he didn’t want to give us his last name because his boss might find out. (Too late, we told him — he was already an Internet superstar.) He and his friends were at the ballpark for his pal Mark’s bachelor party; Mark is getting married this weekend.

The crew came down from Toronto, and Matt said he’d been a fan of Cleveland for many years, and the town’s sports teams. He and his buddies rented a dugout suite for Mark’s big bash, and the group was headed back to Canada on Thursday.

After the game, we took the crew on the field for another picture.

Chances are Matt will be a bit more famous after his brush with Internet fame. Good on ya, Matt. –TribeVibe contributor Joel Hammond
