#CyKluber countdown: Kluber arrives with 11-strikeout gem vs. KC for win No. 2

April24

(Editor’s Note: Leading up to the Nov. 12 announcement of the AL Cy Young Award, we’ll count down Corey Kluber’s 18 wins with a post per day recapping his victories.)

Date/score: April 24, 5-1

Opponent: Kansas City Royals

Pitching line: 9 IP, 0ER, 11SO, 0 BB

Record: 2-2

2014 strikeout total: 30

Key at-bat: Kluber clearly had little trouble with the 2014 AL champs, but gave up an unearned run in the seventh, as Omar Infante singled and scored all the way from first on Nick Swisher’s error on a grounder by Mike Moustakas. No fear: Kluber retired the final seven, including three more strikeouts, for the complete game.

Notable: Only three Royals runners made it to second base: Moustakas, Alcides Escobar (thrown out advancing first to third in the fifth), Jarrod Dyson (single, steal in the third).

Game score (avg. Game Score, developed by sabermetrician Bill James, is 49-50): 88
