Scott Demchuk had his proposal all planned out at Jacobs Field the night of April 27, 2006.

Or so he thought.

It had been roughly five years since he and his girlfriend, Cathy, went on their first date to an Indians game, and Scott had planned to propose to Cathy in the fourth inning. In the third inning, a home run slightly changed Scott’s plans for the better.

“To my amazement, Cathy caught a home run ball in the third inning,” he said. “I brought the ring and a personalized Indians jersey that said ‘Marry Me 06’ on the back. I went on to propose and it couldn’t have been a more perfect night.”

Following the proposal, Scott and Cathy decided to enter the Indians Ultimate Wedding Giveaway, which involves fans voting for the final three couples and ultimately voting on different aspects of the winning couple’s wedding

The Demchuks were the 2006 recipients of the giveaway, and they were married at home plate on September 8 of that year. The couple’s reception was held at the Terrace Club, and their wedding photo made the front page of the Plain Dealer the next morning.

“We filmed TV commercials, did many radio, TV and newspaper interviews; it was a pretty wild ride,” Scott said. “During one of those interviews, Cathy joked that we may have to name our first son Jake after Jacobs Field — the Jake. It really just seemed perfect.”

To the surprise of very few who know the family, Jake Joseph Demchuk was born on July 10th, 2014, weighing 5 lbs., 6 oz.

“Jake already has a bunch of Indians clothes and toys,” Scott said. “He hasn’t been to his first Indians game yet but we hope to take him this season.”
