Corey Kluber is red hot: In May, Kluber has gone 3-0 with a 2.02 ERA (8 ER/35.2 IP), while notching a Major League-high 48 strikeouts against just 7 walks…He has pitched into the 7th inning in each start, limiting opposing batters to a .221 (29-131), average against.

Here’s more good stuff on Kluber as he takes on the red-hot Colorado Rockies lineup Friday night at Progressive Field.

MAY

  • Dating back to 1914, Kluber is just the 4th different Indians pitcher to record at least 8 K’s in 5 consecutive starts (same season), joining Bob Feller, Sam McDowell & CC Sabathia (has been done multiple times among this group)…he is the first to pull the trick since CSabathia from April 14-May 6, 2007 (5 straight) – first RHP since Bob Feller ran up a club-record 9-straight games w/ 8+ K’s in 1946.
  • Extending his 8+ strikeout streak to 5 games in his last start, Kluber because the first pitcher in the Majors this season to accomplish that feat, the first since LHP CLIFF LEE last September…with 8 or more K’s tonight, Kluber will become the first ML pitcher to record 6+ games w/ at least 8 K’s since YU DARVISH from April 12-May 11, 2013

INTERLEAGUE NUMBERS

  • Kluber took his second turn through the Indians rotation on April 8 vs. San Diego and earned his first win of the season (6.0 IP, 2 R, 8 SO) improving to 4-0 with a 2.88 ERA (8 ER/25.0 IP), 26 strikeouts and just one walk in 4 career Interleague starts.
  • Made his first 3 career Interleague starts last season, going 3-0 with a 2.37 ERA (5 ER/19.0 IP) with 18 strikeouts, and just one free pass.
  • The Indians and Padres will share the advantage of a designated hitter today, but it is worth noting that Kluber did draw a walk, and score a run in his start against the Phillies on May 15 – Kluber is 0-2 with a strikeout in his other two career plate appearances

NOTE FROM ELIAS

  • Kluber has 64 K’s over his last 7 starts, 2nd-highest for any hurler this season over a 7-game span (JOSE FERNANDEZ, 65 K’s over first 7 starts of 2014)…last Tribe pitcher with 64 SO in 7 games was DENNIS ECKERSLEY in a stretch from 1976-77 (68K’s).
