ROSTER RUMBLINGS: The Indians announced on Saturday that the club has released OF JEFF FRANCOEUR…Francoeur signed a Minor League contract with an invite to Major League camp on January 6…OF MATT CARSON was also informed by skipper Tito Francona that he will open the season at Triple-A Columbus.
UPDATED ROSTER BREAKDOWN: With the most recent round of roster moves announced this week, the Indians now have a total of 40 players currently in major league camp; this includes 13 non-roster invitees in addition to players on the 40-man roster…the club now has 19 pitchers (4 non-roster), including 17 righthanders and 2 lefties, 4 catchers (2 non-roster), 11 infielders (5 non-roster) and 6 outfielders (2 non-roster).
PESTANO NABS BULLPEN SPOT: Terry Francona also announced that RHP VINNIE PESTANO will begin the season on the Major League club’s 25-man roster…Pestano has allowed just 2 hits and one run over 6.0 innings this spring.
LIKE A ROCK: Cleveland will square off against Colorado for the second consecutive day after taking yesterday’s contest in Scottsdale by a final score of 14-3…yesterday’s victory improved the Indians all-time Cactus League record against the Rockies to 5-6…the Rockies will visit Progressive Field for the first time since 2011 for a 3 game series from May 30-June 1…Colorado is 10-8 all-time vs. Cleveland in regular season Interleague Play.
YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Indians beat the Colorado Rockies 14-3 Friday afternoon at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale improving to16-5-2 in Cactus League play this spring…Cleveland’s lineup was productive top-to-bottom, paced by a 3-hit effort from MICHAEL BRANTLEY, who matched NYJER MORGAN with a game-high 3 RBI…Brantley raised his Cactus League average to .500 (17-34) and now has 7 RBI…LONNIE CHISENHALL and ELLIOT JOHNSON collected a pair of hits each and both drove in 2 runs…ASDRUBAL CABRERA also chipped in a multi-hit game…JUSTIN MASTERSON (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R-ER, 2 BB, 6 SO, 2 WP) notched his third victory of the spring with a quality start, surrendering a pair of runs on 5 hits over 6.0 frames before finishing his work for the day in the Tribe bullpen…CODY ALLEN and TYLER STURDEVANT both worked 1.0 scoreless inning of relief each.
