MASTER CLASS: On Tuesday (Feb. 26), Indians manager Terry Francon announced that RHP JUSTIN MASTERSON would be the club’s Opening Day starter on April 2 at Rogers Centre in Toronto…will signal Masterson’s second career O.D. nod after starting last year’s opener against the Blue Jays – did not record a victory in that tilt despite exiting with a 4-1 lead after 8.0 innings of work (8.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R-ER, 1 BB, 10 SO, 1 HR, 1 WP, 99 pitches/66 strikes)…according to Baseball-Reference, Masterson became just the 4th different Indians pitcher (6th time) dating back to at least 1918 to work 8.0+ innings while holding his opponent to no more than 2 hits and one run in an Opening Day start, joining Bob Feller, Bob Lemon and Sonny Siebert…Masterson’s outing, however, marked the first time under those parameters for the starting pitcher to finish without being awarded a win. In additional research performed through B-R, Masterson became just the 3rd major league hurler since 1918 to work 8.0+ innings and record 10+ strikeouts while holding his opponent to no more than 2 hits and one run in an Opening Day start, joining Cubs RHP Lon Warneke on April 17, 1934 at Cincinnati (6-0 CG SHO) and Phillies RHP Curt Schilling on April 1, 1997 at Los Angeles (3-0 win).

SWEEPLESS IN SEATTLE: The Indians will look to earn their first victory against the Mariners in Cactus League play since moving to Goodyear in 2009…the Tribe is 0-5-2 against the M’s and will have 2 chances against them this season as the clubs will also play each other in Peoria on March 23…Cleveland did not play Seattle last spring with its last meeting coming on March 11, 2011…the Wahoos are 205-162 all-time against the Mariners including a 4-4 mark last season in 3 series, which included a 2-game set and two 3-game sets…this season, Cleveland and Seattle will meet 7 times with 4 coming at Progressive Field (May17-20) and 3 at Safeco Field (July 22-24).
