GREETINGS FROM GOODYEAR: The Cleveland Indians return to the Goodyear Development Complex for their 5th year of spring training in the Cactus League…after 16 seasons in Winter Haven, Florida from 1993-2008, the Tribe became the 14th organization to make its spring training home in Arizona beginning in 2009, while the Cincinnati Reds made it an even 15-15 split of teams between the Cactus and Grapefruit circuits after joining the Indians here in Goodyear for 2010…the Indians instructional league program began using the Goodyear facility in September of 2008…Cleveland also held spring training at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Arizona for 46 seasons from 1947-1992 where then-owner Bill Veeck (1946-49) owned a ranch…portions of the 1989 film “Major League” were filmed at Hi Corbett…a complete list of historical spring training sites can be found on page 443 of the 2013 Indians Media Guide…Cleveland is 53-65-11 (.411) all-time in the Cactus League.

TODAY’S TILT VS. CINCY: The Indians kick off 2013 Cactus League play with 3 straight games against Cincinnati and the three-headed monster of Butcher-Herms-Ramsey…Sunday’s affair will be a split squad contest as the Tribe will also travel to Maryvale to take on Milwaukee…the Goodyear complex mates will also meet 2 additional times on March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day) and March 30 (Cactus League finale)…the Indians are winless over their last 8 meetings with the Redlegs (0-7-1) here in Arizona, losing 5 straight Cactus League tilts and 8 of 10 over the last 2 seasons…the Tribe is 6-8-2 against their interstate rivals all-time in Cactus League play as the club won its first 5 spring meetings against the Reds in 2010 only to see its bid for a sweep halted by a 10-10 tie in 9 innings…the regular season “Battle of Ohio” was a clean split (3-3) in 2012 as both teams swept 3 game sets at their home parks…the Indians hold a 42-39 (.519) record all-time against Cincinnati in regular season play…today’s game will be broadcast live on WTAM 1100AM, the Indians Radio Network and Indians.com.

AT THE HELM: Terry Francona was named the 42nd Manager in Indians history on October 8, 2012…Francona most recently led the Boston Red Sox to five playoff appearances, six seasons of 90 or more victories and two World Series titles (2004, 2007) over an eight-season span from 2004-11 and spent last season as an analyst for ESPN, primarily providing studio work and color commentary on the Sunday Night Baseball telecast..Terry participated in several Cleveland-area events during the offseason, including the club’s Winter Development Program, Tribe Fest and the Town Hall Meeting, as well as a variety of media opportunities…Sandy Alomar begins his second season as bench coach after spending 2010-11 as first base coach…Mickey Callaway enters his first season as pitching coach after serving as the club’s Minor League Pitching Coordinator in 2012..Kevin Cash begins his first season as bench coach after working with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2012 as a Major League Advance Scout…Brad Mills begins his first season in the Indians organization as the third base coach after guiding the Houston Astros from 2010-2012…Mike Sarbaugh enters his first campaign on the major league staff as infield and first base coach and has been a member of the Indians organization since 1990 as a Minor League player, coach and manager and is beginning his first season on the Major League staff most recently managing the Triple-A Columbus Clippers over each of the last three seasons from 2010-12…Ty Van Burkleo begins his first season as Tribe hitting coach after serving as interim Major League Hitting Coach of the Houston Astros in 2012 from August 19th thru the end of the season.
